What We Are Learning

Happy New Year!  January 2018 has arrived!

Please remember to send your child to school with a coat, hat, and gloves as the weather has gotten quite cold.  Please label all items from home so that lost clothing can be returned.

Literacy
Students will begin manipulating the sounds they hear in words to produce new words.  The ability to play with the sounds in words is very helpful with reading and writing.  With winter underway, the class will be reading winter-themed books and addressing how illustrations help us to better understand text.  Additionally, students will discover the similarities and differences in texts that share a common theme.

Math
Having completed Topic 5 before our Christmas break, the class will jump into Topic 6: Understand Addition.  In this topic, students will come to understand addition as "putting together" or "joining" two groups.  Students will represent addition by using their fingers, objects, drawings, and verbal explanations.  As their understanding deepens, students will learn how to write equations to represent addition stories.

Religion
As we return from our Christmas break, students will learn how the baby Jesus was welcomed and about the visit He received from the Three Kings.  By the end of January, we will begin Unit 3 "I Am Catholic" where students will begin learning about the Church and Mass.

December is underway!

Please remember to send your child to school with a coat, hat, and gloves as the weather has gotten quite cold.  Please label all items from home so that lost clothing can be returned.

Literacy
The class is continuing our work with the sounds in words.  Students are becoming experts at listening for the beginning and ending sounds in words.  We are turning into great spellers!  As we move into the Christmas season, we will be learning about reindeer through non-fiction texts as well as embarking on our gingerbread unit.

Math
We have completed Topic 4 and are beginning Topic 5: Classify and Count Data.  In this chapter students will learn to classify and sort objects in two categories based upon given attributes.  After completing this short topic, we will then move into Topic 6: Understand Addition.

Religion
We will continue with Unit 2 "Jesus Loves Me" where we are learning how Jesus protects us.  We are also celebrating Advent as we prepare for the birth of Jesus!

November is here!

Please remember to send your child to school with a coat, hat, and gloves as the weather has gotten quite cold.  Please label all items from home so that lost clothing can be returned.

Literacy
The class has been introduced to half the alphabet.  Even with just those letters, there are many words we can spell.  We are continuing our work with the sounds in words.  We can segment words into each sound we hear and we've begun to listen for ending sounds in words.  The class has also been learning how to identify the setting in a story.

Math
We are finishing Topic 3: Numbers 6 to 10 and beginning Topic 4: Compare numbers 0 to 10.  Students will be applying their knowledge of 'greater than', 'less than', and 'equal to' learned in Topic 2 to the numbers mastered in Topics 1 and 3.

Religion
We have finished Unit 1 "Who Is God?"  We are beginning Unit 2 "Jesus Loves Me" where we will learn how Jesus protects us.
